Two Heads Are Better Than One

2nd October 2007, 6pm - 9pm, Out of the Blue
The Drill Hall, 36 Dalmeny Street, Edinburgh, EH6 8RG

Answers to the five big questions posed [pdf 117KB]. They generated some big ideas and we will take these forward on behalf of Scotland’s young people.

120 people of all ages and backgrounds experienced a memorable and action-packed evening at the Out of the Blue Drill Hall in Dalmeny St in Leith, Edinburgh.

Two Edinburgh’s head teachers – Margaret Russell of Craigroyston Community High School and Dr Judith McClure of St George's School for Girls – spoke passionately about the challenges Scotland’s young people face and how we can all get involved to ensure that they are better prepared to make their own positive imprint on the world.

Their challenge, that Scotland’s business community can do much, much more to enhance the learning experience of children, was a message with resonance for guests from business, sport, education, public service or the media. The most exciting announcement of the evening came from Judith McClure when she revealed that she and Margaret Russell planned to run each other’s schools for a day – marking the beginning of a long and exciting partnership between the two schools.

Children and young people from both schools played a key part in the evening – Riff Raff (St George’s jazz band) and Brazil Nuts (Craigroyston samba band) joined a combined choir from the two schools in a rousing programme of entertainment. But it was the young people’s participation in the big discussions of the evening and then taking to the stage to feedback to a large audience which made the evening truly inspirational.

Aerialist Jennifer Paterson of Curious Seed stunned the audience with a dramatic and seemingly gravity-defying display high above their heads. She was joined by fellow aerialist Skye in an introductory display to get the evening going.
